Job Description:

TapBlaze is an independent game studio behind Good Pizza, Great Pizza, a long-running, character-driven simulation game with a passionate global community. Our games live for years, so story, characters, and tone must remain consistent across frequent live updates, seasonal events, and platform releases.

We are looking for a Senior Narrative Designer to own narrative quality and character integrity across the Good, Great universe.

About The Role

This is a senior, ownership-driven role. The qualified individual will be responsible for ensuring that every story beat, character interaction, and narrative event is logical, consistent, and emotionally coherent.

You will be the final narrative authority for Good Pizza, Great Pizza and related franchises, proactively identifying narrative risks, maintaining long-term character consistency, and partnering closely with Game Design, Live Ops, Art, and Community to ship high-quality narrative content.

Key Responsibilities

Narrative Ownership & Quality

  1. Own narrative logic, character consistency, and tone across all story content;
  2. Ensure characters remain true to their established personalities and motivations;
  3. Identify and resolve narrative issues before content reaches review or release;
  4. Take responsibility for narrative readiness at ship time.

Story & Content Development

  1. Design and write: event narratives and seasonal arcs; character dialogue and story beats; in-game narrative moments and flavor text;
  2. Develop story content that supports gameplay pacing and player experience;
  3. Balance humor, warmth, and emotional resonance with clarity and consistency.

Narrative Systems & Documentation

  1. Create and maintain a living Character Bible;
  2. Define narrative rules, tone guidelines, and character non-negotiables;
  3. Ensure narrative consistency across long-running live content.

Cross-Team Collaboration

  1. Partner closely with Game Designers to integrate narrative into mechanics and events;
  2. Collaborate with art team to align visual storytelling, character portrayal and theme decors;
  3. Work with community team to ensure narrative tone aligns with player expectations;
  4. Push back when narrative integrity or character consistency is at risk.

Review & Mentorship

  1. Review narrative work from contractors or junior writers;
  2. Provide clear, constructive narrative feedback;
  3. Raise narrative standards across the team.

Competencies

  1. Ability to explain why narrative choices were made;
  2. Character development and world-building skills;
  3. Strong sense of character voice, motivation, and emotional continuity;
  4. Passion for games and familiarity with the Good Pizza, Great Pizza and Good Coffee, Great Coffee universes is a big plus;
  5. Great attention to details and strong editing abilities - please mention "beauty is in the details" in your application or cover letter.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  1. 6+ years of experience in narrative design, game writing, or character-driven storytelling;
  2. Prior experience leading or owning narrative delivery on a shipped game, ideally in live-ops environment;
  3. Strong understanding of narrative systems and how story integrates with gameplay;
  4. Preferred: Experience with simulation, cozy, or character-centric games;
  5. Preferred: Familiarity with Yarn narrative scripting tool.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Los Angeles, CA: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work;
  2. Prolonged period of time sitting at a desk and computer.

The salary range for this role is $100,000 to $140,000 per year depending on experience.
