Examples of Duties

An integral part of the nine-person Adult Services Team, the Senior Library Assistant works alongside Librarians at our Reference Desk to provide reference, readers' advisory, and technology assistance to a diverse array of community members in person, by phone, and via email. They also assist with and develop programs and services to meet the literacy and enrichment needs of adults.

We are seeking a community connector who will ensure all community members feel welcome in the library, a curious and persistent troubleshooter who won’t give up until a problem is resolved, and a collaborative teammate excited to work with others to enhance library service to adults. Utilizing their strong customer service, technology, and research skills, our next Senior Library Assistant will ensure patrons discover the information and materials they want and need.

This position is 20 hours per week (0.5 FTE) and requires one evening and one weekend shift. Schedule may be adjusted periodically for trainings or outreach events. May optionally participate in the Readers Services on-call pool for limited additional hours on an occasional, as-needed basis.

Examples of Duties:

  • Provide excellent customer service through reference, readers’ advisory, and technology troubleshooting and assistance
  • Develop or assist with programs and services to meet the literacy and enrichment needs of community members
  • Create resource lists in the library catalog and manage the library’s rotating displays of books and other media for adults
  • Help manage library technology and instruct patrons in its use
  • Participate on library teams and committees

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong customer service skills, including working with members of a diverse community in person, by phone, and via email
  • Knowledge of basic computer software and hardware including Microsoft Office, and the ability to learn complex computer applications
  • Familiarity with basic online research practices
  • Ability to instruct others in basic computer skills and troubleshoot technology problems

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

 

  • Equivalent to a high school diploma AND
  • Two (2) years of experience in library services

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a public library environment.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write fluently in one of these Tigard community languages: Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, Ukrainian, Russian, Arabic, or Somali.

Tuesday 1:45 - 8:15 PM
Friday 11:45 AM - 6:15 PM
Saturday 9:45 AM - 6:15 PM

Benefits: 20 hours per week, benefits are pro-rated. Please reference the Benefits page.

Compensation: The hourly range for this position is $23.75-$31.83 per hour. The starting pay assignment, based on an analysis of the successful candidate’s related experience and education in accordance with the City’s pay equity policy and the Oregon Equal Pay Act, would be no higher than $28.87 per hour.

Classification Notes:
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this position, employees must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone. This classification primarily works indoors and requires frequent standing in work areas and walking between work areas. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and shelve materials. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 40 pounds.

Environmental Elements
Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
