Job Description for Science Teacher

Cate School is currently seeking highly qualified science teaching candidates. The position includes the teaching of four classes in close collaboration with the science department – Three 9th-grade sections of Cate’s foundational, skills-based Physics course and one other course to be determined. Each week, classes meet three times for 65 minutes, teachers host office hours for one hour, and there are one-hour department and faculty meetings. Some classes meet on Saturdays, and all science teachers report to Craig Bouma, Chair of the Science Department. In addition to instructing science, teachers assist or lead two co-curricular seasons and advise 4-6 students.

As a residential institution, school-provided housing may be provided on or near campus with residential dormitory duties assigned. In addition to instructing science, this role may include full residential engagement including residential duty on a dorm team and two co-curricular responsibilities. If housing is not an appropriate fit at this time, a day faculty role may also be an option. Day faculty members are also involved in Cate’s residential and co-curricular programs, though to a lesser extent than housed faculty members. Cate students, teachers, and parents have high expectations for teaching and learning.

 

Consequently, we expect our teachers to…

  • Collaborate work with course team teachers to deliver consistent, high-quality instruction Participate in department, school, and parent meetings and communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and parents regarding student progress and student needs
  • Practice excellent teaching: plan, prepare, and design activities that engage students in inquiry
  • Facilitate active learning experiences be knowledgeable of and incorporate national standards and best practices
  • Identify and select differentiated instructional resources and methods to meet students' varying needs guide and monitor student learning and growth through formative assessment and appropriate feedback
  • Assign and grade class work, homework, tests, and assignments in a timely, fair, and consistent manner and maintain accurate and complete records of student's progress
  • Development participate in department and school meetings, parent meetings
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and parents regarding student progress and student needs
  • Keep updated with developments in the subject area and with teaching resources and methods, make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities,
  • Willing to grow professionally and attend conferences
  • Continue to Learn and maintain a commitment to continuous professional growth through reflective practice, evaluative feedback, and evolving school needs
  • Stay up-to-date with curriculum standards, developments in education, teaching resources and methods, and incorporate new learning into teaching practices
  • Help advance the school’s objectives concerning the curricular integration of computational thinking
  • Demonstrate commitment to DEI work to foster a sense of belonging for each student in science
  • Help advance the department’s objectives concerning anti-racist pedagogies and curriculum

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach 4 classes, attend meetings, and hold office hours
  • Work in a subgroup (i.e., physics) and support other science department programming May advise 4-6 students May assist or lead 2 co-curricular seasons
  • If housing is provided, participate in dorm duty (or equivalent) 1-2 nights a week

 

In terms of education and experience, applicants for this position will have:

  • minimally a BS or BA in science or a related field teaching experience in high school or college science courses preferred
  • demonstrated facility with or ability to learn LMS (Schoology, Veracross, etc.)
