We are looking for a responsible custodian to maintain our facilities. The external and internal appearance of a building reflects on the occupants. It is important for a custodian, or janitor, to be careful and thorough in working, cleaning and tidying the premises, as well as preventing vandalism.

The ideal candidate will be experienced in a custodian role focused on building upkeep. They will have great physical endurance to cover a large space. A keen eye for detail and diligence are also imperative in custodial maintenance jobs.

The custodian is responsible to perform custodial and maintenance duties, including dusting, mopping, finishing and buffing floors, cleaning and restocking restrooms and minor maintenance repairs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Performs general, routine custodial duties, to include dusting, sweeping, mopping, cleaning restrooms, and restocking paper and soap supplies.
• Maintain outer premises by watering plants, mowing lawn, cleaning entrances.
• Perform maintenance, minor repairs and other handyman activities (replacing broken switches, fixing door handles, minor leaks, replacing light bulbs, adjusting furniture etc.)
• Performs routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies.
• Empties trash receptacles, disposes trash into compactors and/or dumpsters, and bags trash for proper disposal.
• Open and inspect the premises at the start of each day.
• Reports needs, concerns or damages to the building administrator, which may include submitting or recommending work orders and checking supply levels.
• Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
• Assists in on-the-job training of new staff on routine procedures.
• Performs cleaning functions specific to the assigned facilities and/or based on seasonal/project requirements.
• May provide vendors with access to areas for cleaning and may answer basic questions. May report issues with vendors to the building administrator..
• Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
• Undertake occasional custodial and janitorial tasks (shoveling snow from the sidewalk, lifting heavy items, moving chairs/tables etc.)
• Assist with unloading and stocking supply deliveries.
• Set up for school events.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

• Ability to understand verbal and written instructions in English.
• Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
• Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies.
• Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
• Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects.
• Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
• Ability to perform minor equipment and building repairs.
• Proven experience as custodian, janitor or in a similar role.
• Knowledge of use and maintenance of industrial cleaning equipment and appliances.
• Knowledge of safe disposal of chemical liquids and other hazardous components.
• Familiarity with basic landscaping and handyman practices.
• Attention to detail and conscientiousness.
• Very good physical condition and strength.
• High school diploma is preferred but not required.

Conditions of Employment:

• Must have a valid SSN.
• Must have a driver's license and own a vehicle.
• Must obtain PA Criminal Records Check.
• Must obtain Federal Criminal History Record Information. (CHRI)
• Must obtain Child Abuse History Clearance.
• Must obtain National Sex Offender Registry Verification.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

• Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
• Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
• Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
