The R&D Technologist will work with the R&D team to support overall product and process development and optimization through creating and evaluating benchtop samples, conducting plant trials in accordance with government and industry standards, and in partnership with Guittard customers, Sales, Marketing, and Operations. Product development includes formulation, application, plant scale up, manufacturing procedures, and production transfer. Process optimization includes productivity initiatives to improve operational effectiveness and efficiency, conducting plant trouble shooting, and defining standard operation procedure for manufacturing chocolates and other products. The position reports to the R&D Director.
Main Responsibilities
- Assist with development of new products, and improvement of existing products and processes, from concept to commercialization, including the making of bench-top prototypes, support of scale-up and production trials, troubleshooting, sensory and shelf-life testing, sample preparation, and NLEA labeling.
- Accurately document lab work, formulas, specifications, and operating procedures.
- Proactively identify opportunities related to the above areas of responsibility and collaborate in cross-functional execution.
- Communicate with vendors and suppliers as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in food science or equivalent required. Master’s degree is preferred.
- 1-3 years of full-time industry experience in manufacturing or product development preferred; preferably with chocolate experience.
- Strong foundation in food chemistry with ability to practically apply to product development and manufacturing.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Practical skills in project management and cross functional coordination.
- Innovative, self-starter, and able to multitask.
- Well organized and pays attention to detail.
- Able to perform in a demanding and fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with computer systems and spreadsheet software (Microsoft Office).
Additional
- Able to walk and stand long term in plant production environment.
- Capable to routinely lift 50 lbs.
