General Summary

This position works under general supervision and is primarily responsible for using laboratory equipment and standardized procedures in the Culture Plant to test and evaluate the company’s products with regard to quality standards.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

  • Knows and adheres to all relevant safety protocols.
  • Conducts all required tests on in-process and finished product for quality control approval in accordance with Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
  • Perform routine equipment calibrations or verifications (i.e., scales, pH meters).
  • Coordinates production of and performs inoculation of inoculation medium.
  • Utilizes aseptic techniques to ensure sterility of all media, equipment and work areas.
  • Keeps detailed and accurate records in appropriate company database (SAP, CHEOPS, LIMS) of all tests performed or evaluations/analyses conducted.
  • Keeps detailed and accurate records of training received.
  • Completes production journals, batch records and/or lab requisitions.
  • Communicates any testing nonconformance to management or process technology (PTA) as necessary.
  • Assists with training of staff as identified by management.
  • Participates in continuous improvement programs (Kaizen, Metrics, Lean, 5S)
  • Keeps lab and work area clean and orderly.
     

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to read and comprehend documents such as standard operating procedures and equipment manuals.
  • Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions from colleagues, other departments and occasionally auditors.
  • Ability to interpret testing results and follow SOP document for appropriate action.
  • Ability to operate a variety of lab equipment and instruments and a variety of office equipment.
  • Possess a working knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices and compliance requirements.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office programs including Word and Excel as well as database programs.
  • Ability to use metric measurements (i.e., mL) and temperatures measurements in Centrigrade (°C).
  • Perform basic dilution series on product in accordance with specifications or recipes.
  • These characteristics are normally acquired through a Bachelors Degree in a scientific field or three years experience in a laboratory environment.
     

Working Conditions

Working environment is generally favorable. Lighting, temperature and noise levels are adequate with occasional exposure to cold temperatures. Personal Protective Equipment is required at all times in designated areas. This can include wearing a lab coat, hair/beard net, safety glasses, and/or gloves. A dust mask is required when working with powdered media substances. Weekend and holiday work may be required.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, talk and hear. The employee is regularly required to lift and/or move materials or equipment up to 25 lbs. Frequent use of hands to finger, handle or touch objects, tools or controls. Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
