Job Description:

The Publicity Assistant will report to two Directors in the Henry Holt & Co. publicity department. Henry Holt & Co. has published award-winning books for over 150 years, with a particular strength in nonfiction, historically. We are currently expanding our fiction list and this position will support campaigns across genres, including commercial/literary crossover fiction, memoirs, journalistic and narrative nonfiction titles, among others. In addition to departmental administrative duties, this position offers both the chance to work on projects independently and be mentored by a tight-knit team of fantastic publicists. This position is perfect for a self-starter, someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment and multi-tasks easily. Ideally this candidate is familiar with the Holt list and is passionate about spreading the word about great books, tapped into to the media and cultural landscape, and most importantly, loves to read widely.

What you'll do:

  • Provides administrative and publicity support to senior level Publicity team members.
  • Assists in pitching and implementing high-impact publicity campaigns, scheduling author interviews, and liaising with organizations and bookstores to arrange author events.
  • Assists with author book tours, booking travel and maintaining complex schedules.
  • Drafts and distributes compelling press materials and creative pitch letters.
  • Answers a variety of calls from media, authors, agents and booksellers with professionalism.
  • Coordinates media mailings of galleys and finished books.
  • Monitors book coverage in key media outlets, responds to and fulfills book requests from media, and tracks bestseller information.
  • Researches media outlets and event venues and updates publicity and tour information databases.
  • Maintains files pertaining to authors, book tours, invoices, etc.
  • Organizes and submits entries for book awards.
  • Assists with daily departmental duties (distributing mail, circulating press clips, completing copy center jobs, etc.).
  • Occasionally escorts authors to media and bookstore appearances in and around New York City.
  • Communicating internally between the Marketing, Editorial, and Production departments
  • Maintaining media clips, press contacts, and detailed logs of publicity projects in an internal database system.

  • Should have a passion for books and knowledge of the media landscape

Ideal Expereince:

  • Relevant work experience to match the required skills/knowledge above
  • Desirable: Internship at a publishing house, literary agency, or public relations organization, or experience in book retail
  • Bachelor’s Degree or relevant work experience

This role will have an annual salary of $47,500.
