Job Description:
We are seeking a talented and experienced Props Designer/Master to join our team and contribute to the success of our upcoming productions. In this role, you will conceptualize, design, purchase, and pull from storage all props-related elements for our theatre productions. Working closely with directors, set designers, and production teams, you will bring creativity, precision, and attention to detail to every aspect of the props design process.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prop Design and Creation:
- Develop creative concepts and designs for props that align with the vision and requirements of each production.
- Research historical, cultural, and thematic elements to ensure authenticity and relevance in prop design.
- Construct props using a variety of materials, techniques, and tools, ensuring they are visually striking and functional for use on stage.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate closely with directors, set designers, costume designers, and other production team members to ensure cohesive visual storytelling.
- Communicate effectively with directors and other stakeholders to understand their vision and incorporate feedback into the design process.
- Coordinate with production teams to ensure timely delivery and integration of props into rehearsals and performances.
- Budgeting and Resource Management:
- Manage budgets for props design and construction, ensuring efficient use of resources and adherence to financial constraints.
- Source materials and supplies within budgetary constraints, negotiating with vendors and suppliers as needed.
- Maintain inventory of props, equipment, and materials, organizing storage spaces and tracking usage for future productions.
- Team Leadership and Mentorship:
- Lead a team of prop artisans and technicians, providing guidance, support, and supervision throughout the design and construction process.
- Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment, encouraging creativity, innovation, and professional growth among team members.
- Mentor junior staff and interns, sharing knowledge, skills, and best practices in prop design and construction.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Theatre Design, Fine Arts, or related field preferred.
- Proven experience as a Props Designer or Master in regional theatre or similar production environment.
- Proficiency in prop design and construction techniques, including carpentry, sculpting, painting, and textile work.
- Strong creative vision and ability to translate concepts into tangible props that enhance storytelling.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced production environment.
- Knowledge of theatrical safety standards and practices.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and irregular hours as required by production schedules.
