Position Summary

The Programmer II is a valuable member of the Advancement Information Services team in the Office of University Advancement at William & Mary.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Application Services, the Programmer II is responsible for technology support and programming/development for applications reporting for end-users. The Programmer II participates in life cycle application deployment to meet Advancement’s enterprise needs, including design, development, testing, and implementation. The Programmer II will work with end-users, database technologists, programmer/analysts and other information technology professionals in developing and supporting the business systems of the university. In collaboration with partners across campus, the Programmer II aids non-senior developers, as needed, and peer reviews code pre-production.


Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  1. Tier one support for Advancement’s technology ecosystem.
  2. Design, develop, and implement technologies to assist in innovating and supporting Advancement’s needs.
  3. Troubleshoot problems with internal technology systems, other 3rd party applications, and university-designed software. Assist in identifying data integrity issues and software design issues.
  4. Write and/or modify reports as needed by functional users. Assist functional users in the development and maintenance of reports.

  2. This position may require occasional overnight travel.
  3. The duties of this position may be performed remotely. With the supervisor’s approval, the incumbent may have the option to work remotely on a full- or part-time basis.
  4. Information Security: This position requires administrative access to the university’s information systems and/or sensitive College data. The incumbent is expected to be aware of and adhere to the Information Security policies of the university as well as all applicable federal, state, and local laws. Additionally, the incumbent is expected to follow information security best practices applicable to their job area and to pursue information security training and awareness opportunities when possible.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in information technology or related field or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
  2. Experience in systems analysis, application design and application programming.
  3. Experience in programming with C# (or other common programming languages), JavaScript, SQL and other tools.
  4. Experience working on moderately complex IT projects with technical responsibilities.
  5. Working knowledge of web applications programming.
  6. Demonstrated knowledge of relational databases and programming with SQL, with the demonstrated ability to develop reports, and/or create enhancements to systems.
  7. Demonstrated knowledge of object-oriented programming, preferably in the Microsoft ecosystem.
  8. Knowledge of Blackbaud CRM or a similar CRM system, with demonstrated skills in systems analysis, application design and programming.
  9. Excellent interpersonal, oral & written communication skills with the demonstrated ability to interface with a variety of customers and provide a high level of service and work collaboratively in a dynamic team environment.
  10. Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects while sustaining daily operations.


Preferred Qualifications

  1. Master’s degree in computer science or related field.
  2. Working knowledge of C#, Java, PHP or other common programming languages.
  3. Solid experience programming in SQL.
  4. Experience in a higher education IT environment.

$70,000-$80,000, commensurate with experience
