Job Summary

The Clinical and Translational Science Institute ( CTSI ) supports various faculty researchers, data scientists, clinical coordinators, and informaticists. This position works with the CTSI Biomedical Informatics Core ( BMIC ) as the primary analyst/programmer on a next-generation REDCap-based project to orchestrate and manage multiple databases of scoring tables and algorithm implementation. Additionally, this project will work with the BMIC engineering team to build a custom web application to visualize and present data within the workflow to support clinical and research pipelines. This is an excellent opportunity to grow your data wrangling, data management, and web application programming skills.

The Clinical and Translational Science Institute ( CTSI ) is an academic home for clinical and translational research, developing innovative health services and training new investigators. Four foundations of discovery compose the institute: Cores and Services, Education and Training, Clinical Research Support Office, and Administration. These foundations provide support for T1 to T4 research.

Utah CTSI has produced leading investigators with several NIH grants awarded for their various “bench-to-bedside” areas of research and partners with other flagship institutions to contribute published works and clinical success.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

Data Management and REDCap Integration:

  1. Develop and manage REDCap projects to capture raw scores and demographic data.
  2. Import and maintain normative tables within REDCap.
  3. Configure REDCap to perform data translation and processing, converting raw scores to scaled scores, T-scores, etc.
  4. Ensure data integrity and streamline data collection workflows

Web Application Development:

  1. Design and develop a custom web application to visualize and present data.
  2. Create interactive interfaces for study teams to view results, filter data, and generate individual reports.
  3. Integrate REDCap output into the web application for provider-facing results.

Technical Implementation:

  1. Configure, debug, test, and implement designed solutions for assigned projects.
  2. Ensure the system design and architecture align with project goals and requirements.

Funding and Duration:

This position is funded for 2 years, depending on the start date. If additional funding is not secured after the project’s completion, this position will be subject to a reduction in force.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). 2-5 years of programmer/analyst or related experience.

Technical Skills:

  1. Proficiency in REDCap data management and integration.
  2. Experience with web application programming (e.g., HTML , CSS , JavaScript, Python, or similar languages).
  3. Familiarity with database management and data wrangling techniques.
  4. Ability to work with complex data sets and perform cross-table referencing.

Analytical Skills:

  1. Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  2. Capability to perform substantial calculations and data processing.
  3. Experience with automated scoring and algorithm implementation.

Communication and Collaboration:

  1. Excellent communication skills to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  2. Ability to translate technical requirements into practical solutions.
  3. Collaborative mindset to support internal operations and service units.

Technical Preferences:

  1. Experience with REDCap API : Proficiency in using REDCap’s Application Programming Interface ( API ) for integrating third-party add-ons and exchanging data.
  2. Custom REDCap Solutions: Ability to develop custom REDCap projects, including complex data collection instruments, active surveillance, data quality rules, and reports
  3. Full Stack Development: Expertise in full stack web development, including front-end ( HTML , CSS , JavaScript) and back-end (Python, PHP , or similar languages) programming
  4. Database Management: Strong skills in managing and optimizing databases, particularly for handling large, complex data sets
  5. Version Control Systems: Proficiency in using version control systems like Git/GitHub/GitLab for collaborative development and code management
  6. DevOps Practices: Familiarity with DevOps tools and practices, including continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) pipelines
