Job Description:

Founded by Bad Robot (Lost, Cloverfield, Westworld, Star Wars, Star Trek), we at Bad Robot Games are on a mission to continually reinvent how stories are played.

We are a remote-first games company represented by a diverse team, which empowers us to make the kinds of games in which all players can see themselves. Working closely with our colleagues at Bad Robot Productions, our projects unite our extensive network of games, TV, and film industry talent to create original IPs, expansive worlds and tell new stories across all media platforms which are as fun to watch as they are to play.

Bad Robot Games is looking for a Principal UI Engineer who is an expert in creating streamlined user experiences that are sleek, polished, and unobtrusive. In this role, you will own the UI engineering discipline end-to-end from architecture and systems design to final polish, all while setting the technical bar for how UI is built and maintained across the studio. We are looking for a deeply experienced engineer who can lead by example, uplift the team around them, and ensure robust, long-term decisions are made throughout the UI pipeline.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Surface gameplay concepts through the HUD and in-game UI
  2. Implement store, progression, settings, loading and matchmaking screens
  3. Own the core architecture of our UI systems and ensure they are robust, maintainable, and extendable
  4. Own all polish aspects of UI including animation and audio
  5. Iterate with our internal team to find the proper visual aesthetic for our menus
  6. Prototype, polish, and maintain any in-world interfaces
  7. Bring technical excellence to UI across multiple features and platforms, and be a go-to resource for the broader engineering team
  8. Optimize and fix bugs in existing UI systems, including porting Blueprints to native code where appropriate
  9. Improve and iterate on existing features, accept and respond to critical feedback, and prototype new features as needed
  10. Write robust, maintainable code and contribute ideas toward all aspects of the game's production and development
  11. Collaborate cross discipline with engineering, design, and art to problem solve and push the quality of the player experience
  12. Participate in playtesting and providing hands-on feedback as the project progresses
  13. All of our roles require up to 10% air travel. Examples include Studio/Team Offsites, Team/Studio Events, etc.

Key Qualifications

  1. 15+ years of game development experience in an engineering role, with significant focus on UI systems
  2. At least two shipped games on PC or Console, at least one of which was in Unreal Engine (and ideally was a multiplayer shooter)
  3. Deep expertise in C++, UMG, Slate, and audio integration
  4. Veteran in both PC and console input paradigms
  5. Able to code and architect UI systems, gameplay mechanics, and supporting tools
  6. A keen analytical mind with strong problem-solving skills and creativity in thinking outside established solutions
  7. Excellent communication and collaboration skills and able to work across disciplines and inspire those around them
  8. Self-motivated, strong work ethic, and able to work independently in a fast-paced start-up environment
  9. Proficiency in the pipelines, tools, and processes of creating, building, shipping, and supporting games
  10. A passion for multiplayer online gaming and a rich history of playing across a wide variety of genres
  11. Performance optimization experience specific to UI rendering and draw call budgets
  12. All of our roles require up to 10% air travel. Examples include Studio/Team Offsites, Team/Studio Events, etc.
