Posting Summary

Rutgers Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research seeks a biomedical informatics researcher to lead research and grant development in trustworthy AI for scientific evidence synthesis and health care. The successful candidate will develop and evaluate large language model methods for scientific claim verification, advance AI-assisted systematic and living reviews, and study how AI models stay reliable as data and practice change. The position combines research leadership, development of NIH proposals, and contributions to AI-focused research training programs. A unifying theme is the design of systems in which humans and AI perform better together than either alone.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

Research

Design AI-assisted systematic and living review workflows covering retrieval, screening, extraction, and continuous updating, and evaluate them against human-labeled reference standards.

Lead the development and validation of methods that test whether cited publications substantiate the claims made about them, from sentence-level claims to paragraph-level and network representations of evidence.

Study the reliability of AI models in biomedical settings, including detection of performance drift and automatic adaptation of models across data sources and over time.

Develop and evaluate machine learning, clinical NLP, and multimodal AI methods for biomedical and health care research.

Design evaluations of human-AI collaboration, including automation bias and the conditions under which combined performance exceeds either partner alone.

Publish in peer-reviewed journals and conferences and release reproducible research software.

Grant development

Lead the preparation of NIH research proposals, beginning with an R01 application, including specific aims, background, preliminary data, approach, and evaluation plans.

Generate and analyze preliminary data, and coordinate contributions from faculty, students, and collaborators.

Identify further funding opportunities for research and training programs.

Education and mentoring

Develop and deliver intensive courses and workshops on AI-assisted systematic reviews, machine learning, and responsible AI.

Contribute to the development of AI research training programs and educational grant initiatives.

Mentor doctoral students and junior researchers in study design, AI methods, research software, and scientific writing.

Overview

The Center for Biomedical Informatics and Health AI was established to serve as the catalyst for a transformative effort that establishes Rutgers as a national and international leader in computational medicine and health AI. The overarching goal is to bring together substantial existing, but currently siloed, strengths in the broad area of biomedical informatics, including bioinformatics, clinical informatics, clinical research informatics, public health informatics, translational bioinformatics, etc., and substantially expanding them, especially in the area of health AI, making them collectively much more than the sum of their parts.
