Job Description:

The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation seeks applicants for a Postgraduate Textile Conservation Fellow. This term position will support the work undertaken by the textile conservation team. The pay for this role is ($19 per hour) (37,000 annually) and is benefits-eligible and comes with some funds that may be used for professional development. This is a one year position with the possibility of renewal. 

The Postgraduate Textile Conservator Fellow will participate in the ongoing work of the textile conservation lab: enhancing the protection and preservation of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s cultural assets by performing examination, treatment, and documentation of materials such as small and large flat textiles and various historic garments from the decorative art and folk art collections. The conservator will have the opportunity to collaborate with curators, conservators in other specialties, preventive conservation specialists, historic tradespeople, historic interpreters, and other colleagues.   

Qualified applicants will be prepared to demonstrate their experience working with various types of textiles or fiber art, as well as documentation and research skills. The Postgraduate Fellow will have scientific knowledge sufficient to undertake some examination and analysis of collection items. A master’s degree from a recognized conservation program or significant apprenticeship/technical training is required. Candidates must be legally able to work in the US.   All applicants must be capable of lifting up to 50lbs, able to stand or sit for long periods. All employees of Colonial Williamsburg are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.  

Additional skills:  Familiarity with digital photography and Microsoft Office products. Highly developed dexterity to handle collections, use tools, and perform conservation treatments. Ability to make best use of time and resources: using facilities, materials, and equipment effectively and with reasonable and appropriate care. Ability to communicate effectively and follow instructions orally and in writing. 

Preferred qualifications: Concentrated experience in textile conservation practice and mounting of costumes for display.
