Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to perform the duties of Microbiologist 2. Under general supervision, performs standard and specialized microbiological analyses on environmental samples submitted to the Illinois Department of Public Health Springfield Laboratory. Performs tests, reports results, and maintains supporting documentation as required by certification and accreditation programs for testing. Trains other personnel on testing procedures, including documentation procedures.

Job Responsibilities

1. Performs specialized and complex microbiological and chemical procedures for the isolation, identification and enumeration of organisms and for antibiotic detection for dairy samples in accordance with the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) Pasteurized Milk Ordinance sampling requirements.

  • Obtain and maintain certification under the US FDA for dairy testing.

 


2. Performs specialized microbiological and chemical analyses on water samples, including Non-community Public Water Supplies, private wells, bathing beaches, surface water samples and other water samples of interest to the Department’s programs.

  • Provide testing and documentation on water sample testing to maintain laboratory certification from the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) for drinking water resting under the Safe Drinking Water Act.

 


3. Performs specialized microbiological analyses on food samples for the isolation and identification of organisms using laboratory validated testing utilizing standard microbiology reference and approved under ISO 17025 accreditation.

 


4. Maintain documentation and quality control records to support the validity of testing results.

  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment and document records of the maintenance.
  • Maintain adequate supplies for testing.

 


5. Provides training to other staff on testing and documentation methods required for laboratory programs.

6. Provides assistance to other units.

  • Prepares samples/specimens for testing.
  • Performs tests following appropriate laboratory procedures.
  • Analyzes results.
  • Prepares reports of findings.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on testing equipment.

 


7. Prepares special culture media, reagents, solutions, and stains for use in microbiological analyses.

  • Performs tests.
  • Interprets results.
  • Determines if retests are necessary.

 


8. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonable within the scope of those enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in microbiology, biology, or a related field from a recognized college or university.
  • Requires one year’s professional experience in testing of specimens submitted for diagnosis of infectious diseases, or in the testing of foods, dairy products, ware samples, or biological products.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of professional laboratory experience in environmental laboratory testing samples of food, dairy products, water, or biological products.
  • Extensive knowledge of federal and state regulations pertaining to laboratory testing of water, dairy, and food samples.
  • Two years of professional experience in the operation and maintenance of analytical instrumentation and equipment.
  • Two years of professional experience maintaining laboratory records.
  • Two years of experience applying sterile techniques to avoid contamination of samples.
