McClatchy seeks a top-notch editor who can work with a team and across multiple newsrooms to generate timely, high-impact enterprise stories off the news that work uniquely well for digital. In partnership with editors in McClatchy’s small and medium newsrooms across the United States, this editor will help supercharge and spread our Reality Checks initiative, delivering a steady diet of well-reported but digestible, quick-turn enterprise stories across markets on topics of high local interest.

A successful candidate has demonstrated success in guiding hard-charging enterprise and investigative journalism and shaping it for digital audiences. We’re looking for an editor who can help us reinvent and elevate investigative reporting for the digital age. We want to develop a timely, steady, sustained stream of successful, focused enterprise journalism and deeper-dives shaped around the news of the day.

You’ll help build out a small team of reporters and work with editors in McClatchy’s small and medium markets to super-charge their local accountability reporting efforts around key topics. To meet this challenge, you’ll need a passion for accountability journalism, the drive to produce it regularly and a unique understanding of how to deliver it in ways that build and retain local subscribers.

This position is remote but will ideally be located near one of McClatchy’s 20+ small or medium markets.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is between $80,000 and $95,000 a year, up to 40 hours per week. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, relevant education, department equity, training, geography and local wage and hours laws.

The successful candidate should meet many, though not necessarily all, of the following requirements:
 

• College degree or equivalent work experience
• 5 years of editing experience, with an emphasis on timely, impactful investigative or enterprise reporting for digital audiences.
• Proficiency in utilizing AI tools and technologies is highly desired.
• Must have reliable transportation. Must have valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance required (at least minimum insurance required for the state in which the employee works).
• Strong writing and editing skills, excellent news judgment and a demonstrated ability to “see the story” that is going to matter to readers.
• Unwavering commitment to accurate, ethical journalism.
• Ability to build source networks and bring a constant flow of story ideas across multiple markets
• Ability to work collaboratively to aggressively tackle stories with multiple newsrooms.
• Comfort with a job that will be demanding, fast-paced and constantly evolving.
• Facility with data, public records and business reports.
