Job Description:

Granite Media Partners Inc. seeks a dynamic area editor to lead two community newspapers in the greater Austin metropolitan complex: the Taylor Press, a twice-weekly publication that recently swept the Texas Press Association awards, and the Elgin Courier, a once-a-week mainstay in Bastrop County.

Both papers are located in growth markets driven by emerging, multibillion-dollar high-tech industries including Samsung Austin Semiconductor and the Tesla Gigafactory, putting the area on the global stage. The editor who assumes this role has a solid staff of reporters and designers at his or her disposal and will answer to the executive editor.

Can you stand up to public officials? Can you withstand audience complaints with a smile? Can you handle the stories of joy and tragedy, all in the same day? Do you have insatiable curiosity? Do you hunger not just for facts but the truth? Can you make deadlines? Do you hate getting beat by other media?

This is not a job for a beginner or the faint of heart, but a seasoned journalist who can roll with the punches.

Both the Taylor and Elgin markets are fascinating places to cover as the region transitions from traditional agribusiness to semiconductors, space technology and blending diverse cultures. In addition, the markets are close enough to Austin with all of its cultural amenities, yet far enough away to avoid the frantic hustle of big-city life.

The papers have a strong online presence aided by a digital department using videos, breaking news stories (sometimes daily) and social-media posts to connect with their audience. The Taylor Press also publishes a monthly, in-depth magazine called the East Wilco Insider covering business, real estate, politics and crime trends in eastern Williamson County.

Come oversee coverage of some of the biggest stories in Texas today and join Granite Media Partners, which owns 10 newspapers (including one of the oldest in the Lone Star State), 13 news websites, seven magazines, a printing press and manages three client newspapers.

This is a full-time position and cannot be done remotely. The successful candidate is expected to move to the Taylor area.
