Job Description:

The Junior Release Train Engineer (Jr RTE) is a hands-on delivery leader responsible for directly supporting Agile teams at the team level while enabling cross-team coordination and flow.

In Concorde’s delivery context—where scale does not justify a fully detached, “hands‑off” Release Train Engineer—this role intentionally blends Scrum Master execution, Lean‑Agile flow management, and emerging RTE capabilities.

This is not a passive coaching role. The Jr RTE rolls up their sleeves, facilitates daily execution, removes impediments, and actively improves how work flows from idea to delivery. They operate inside the team, while maintaining systems thinking beyond the team.

This role exists because:

  1. We are too small for a fully detached RTE
  2. Teams need execution help, not theoretical coaching
  3. Delivery requires adaptability beyond pure Scrum


Core Responsibilities

Team-Level Agile Execution (Primary Focus)

The Jr RTE acts as the day-to-day Agile leader for one or more teams, performing responsibilities commonly associated with a Scrum Master, while remaining framework‑agnostic.

  1. Facilitate daily standups, sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives
  2. Actively remove blockers and impediments (not just track them)
  3. Partner with Product Owners to:
  4. Refine backlogs
  5. Improve story readiness
  6. Balance flow, priority, and capacity
  7. Ensure work is:
  8. Visible
  9. Actively progressing
  10. Properly sized and sequenced
  11. Coach teams in real time, inside the work—not from the sidelines

Success looks like: The team delivers more predictably because someone is actively helping the work move.


Flow & Delivery Management (Beyond Scrum)

Unlike a traditional Scrum Master, the Jr RTE is not limited to Scrum mechanics.

  1. Apply Lean, Kanban, or hybrid practices when Scrum is insufficient
  2. Identify bottlenecks across:
  3. People
  4. Process
  5. Dependencies
  6. Optimize flow rather than enforcing ceremony compliance
  7. Help teams transition between ways of working when needed


Cross-Team & Emerging ART Support (Secondary Focus)

While embedded with teams, the Jr RTE also begins to think at the system level.

  1. Surface cross-team dependencies and risks
  2. Coordinate with other team leads, Product, and Portfolio partners
  3. Support scaled ceremonies only where they add value
  4. Prepare the organization for future ART maturity, without over-engineering it today


Metrics, Transparency & Governance

  1. Maintain practical, lightweight metrics:
  2. Flow efficiency
  3. Predictability
  4. Throughput
  5. Ensure Jira (or equivalent tools) reflect reality—not ceremony theater
  6. Support governance needs without slowing delivery


What This Role Is Not

  1. A “coach from the back of the room”
  2. A ceremony-only Scrum enforcer
  3. A detached RTE with no skin in delivery
  4. A waterfall Project Manager in Agile clothing


Success Measures

  1. Teams deliver more consistently
  2. Blockers are resolved quickly
  3. Agile practices evolve based on reality, not dogma
  4. Stakeholders see progress, not process
