Job Description:

Media Proper is a dynamic and innovative web development company located in the heart of Media Borough, Delaware County, PA. We specialize in crafting tailored websites, offering digital marketing solutions and providing ongoing maintenance services to ensure our clients' online presence remains robust and effective.

Position Overview

We’re hiring a WordPress Web Developer (Contractor) with 3–5 years of professional experience in custom WordPress development, ideally with WooCommerce and DevOps/server management skills.

This is a technical role for someone who has built WordPress sites from scratch, not just modified themes or installed plugins. You’ll work closely with our project manager and design team to translate Figma mockups into fully functional, fast, and secure websites.

This is NOT the role for a beginner or a content manager. We need someone who can build clean, scalable WordPress sites and handle deployment workflows confidently.

This is primarily an in-person position based in our Media, PA office. We strongly prefer candidates who can commute to the office. In special circumstances, we may consider a remote arrangement for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Collaborate with clients, the project manager, and designers to understand project requirements, functionality needs, and desired user experience.
  2. Translate Figma design concepts into clean, responsive, and accessible front-end code (HTML, CSS/SCSS, JavaScript/jQuery) following web standards and best practices.
  3. Build custom WordPress themes and templates using PHP and ACF, with a focus on performance, security, and maintainability.
  4. Implement and troubleshoot third-party API integrations and WooCommerce functionality.
  5. Ensure cross-browser and device compatibility with thorough QA testing and debugging.
  6. Optimize website performance (load speed, caching, image optimization, Core Web Vitals improvements).
  7. Manage deployment workflows, including staging/production environments, version control (Git), and build processes.
  8. Monitor server performance, conduct site audits, and manage DNS, SSL, and hosting configurations when needed.
  9. Stay on top of WordPress security, apply patches, and proactively address vulnerabilities.
  10. Provide technical support and clear communication during client meetings and presentations.
  11. Support ongoing maintenance and updates for existing websites, including plugin management, troubleshooting, and performance tuning.
  12. Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, DevOps tools, and web development best practices.

Responsibilities

  1. Strong proficiency in core web languages: HTML, CSS/SCSS, JavaScript/jQuery, and PHP.
  2. Advanced WordPress development experience, including custom theme development and ACF.
  3. Familiarity with server environments (Docker/Apache/Nginx) and DNS management.
  4. Experience with Git and deployment workflows (e.g., GitLab CI or similar).
  5. Understanding of caching, CDN integration, and performance monitoring tools (e.g., Google Lighthouse).
  6. Working knowledge of MySQL and basic database management tasks.
  7. Ability to identify and solve technical issues efficiently across both front-end and back-end stacks.
  8. Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with internal teams and clients.
