Job Description:

The American Thoracic Society (ATS) improves global health by advancing research, patient care, and public health in pulmonary disease, critical illness, and sleep disorders. Founded in 1905 to combat TB (Tuberculosis), ATS has grown to tackle asthma, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), lung cancer, sepsis, acute respiratory distress, and sleep apnea, among other diseases.

 

 

The Position:

Reporting directly into the ATS Chief of Advocacy & Government Relations, the Government Relations Intern will:

  • Assist with advocacy communications and events.
  • Attend committee meetings and other external meetings.
  • Conduct background research on policy issues, which include legislation, regulation, and scientific manuscripts.
  • Develop contact information database for state Medicaid directors and private insurance coverage policy directors.
  • Review and summarize major federal regulations (i.e. Medicare physician fee schedule, EPA Mercury Air Toxics rule).
  • Capture video content for the ATS Advocacy website.
  • Summarize state law on key respiratory topics (vaping, albuterol access, PFAS bans etc.).
  • Schedule Hill and Administrative meetings.
  • Draft decision memos for ATS leadership.
  • Create a capstone project.
  • Analyze the current operations of ATS and offer recommendations.

 

 

Position Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled within a bachelor's degree program, entering junior or senior year.
  • Career interest/degree program related to public policy, medicine, and/or public health.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.

 

 

Physical requirements:

  • This internship will take place in our Washington DC office from June 2024 to August 2024. We anticipate a schedule of Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the office from 9am – 5pm. The duration of internship, start date, end date, and schedule will be determined between the selected intern and ATS staff.
  • You may experience prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing.
  • You may experience repeated typing motions involving your wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • You may need to lift or carry up to 15 pounds of work equipment.

 

 

Pay: We are pleased to offer $20/hour for this internship.
