ABOUT THE DATA & ANALYTICS TEAM

Our Mission: We connect people with data by enriching it with computation and making it visible, discoverable, analyzable, and shareable for maximum reach and impact.

We build Python and TypeScript web applications that help scientists, analysts, and researchers work with their data. Our projects range from large-scale data management platforms to custom visualization tools to open-source libraries used across the scientific community. Our team is roughly 20 engineers, and most projects are staffed with two to four people.

2. Domain-specific applications: Building custom applications for collaborators, including national labs, universities, medical device manufacturers, and government agencies, for web and mobile platforms.
3. Interactive data visualization: Creating browser-based tools that make large-scale scientific data explorable and understandable, from medical imaging to environmental modeling.
4. Open-source libraries and tools: Extending and maintaining Kitware's portfolio of widely used open-source projects, improving their web integrations and developer experience.

WHO YOU ARE

We're looking for experienced engineers who thrive with autonomy, weigh tradeoffs thoughtfully, and are energized by working across a variety of projects and technologies.

You Bring (required):

1. Full-stack experience on modern web applications, with back-end depth in Python (Django or similar)
2. Comfort with HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript, and frameworks like Vue.js and React
3. Working knowledge of databases, REST APIs, and web security fundamentals
4. Experience with Git, continuous integration, and automated testing
5. Due to contractual restrictions, only candidates who are U.S. persons (citizens, permanent residents, asylees, or refugees) will be considered for this position

You've Likely Also Done Some of These (preferred):

1. Worked with large or complex scientific datasets
2. Communicated technical tradeoffs to non-technical collaborators, like researchers or domain experts
3. Contributed to open-source projects
4. Built well-crafted user interfaces, including interactive data visualizations
5. Worked with cloud services and DevOps tools

1. Can get up to speed on unfamiliar scientific problem spaces quickly: on one project you may be learning histopathology, and on the next, fisheries data
2. Are comfortable saying "we shouldn't do this" to a customer when the fit isn't right
3. Would rather build the right solution for a specific problem than use your favorite framework on every project
4. Provide and receive candid technical feedback, including respectfully challenging ideas you disagree with, while maintaining a professional and collaborative approach
5. Are humble enough to recognize the limits of your own expertise and actively seek out colleagues who know more
6. Are self-directed and take ownership of your work without waiting to be told what to do (we don't micromanage)

Qualifications:

1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, plus 3+ years of professional web development experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. This role is open to remote candidates in these 23 states: AL, AZ, CO, DC, FL, GA, IL, IN, MA, MD, ME, MN, NC, NM, NY, OH, OR, PA, TN, TX, UT, VA, WI. Preference will be given to those local to our Clifton Park, NY, office.

Our Interview Process:

1. Initial screen: A brief conversation with HR to learn about your background and tell you more about the team.
2. Technical interview: A discussion with engineers on the team focused on your experience and strengths, with brief code reading and writing exercises, but no whiteboard algorithm challenges.
3. Full-day interview: You'll meet leaders and members of our team, deliver a short presentation about yourself, participate in a series of small-group interviews on various topics, and leave with a fuller picture of what it's like to work here.
