About The Role


The University of Iowa Libraries is seeking a Full Stack Web Application Developer to join its Library Information Technology (LIT) team. This role involves designing, developing, testing, debugging, and troubleshooting web-based applications and software solutions that enhance access to library resources and services. The developer will conduct system analysis, create technical specifications, and provide technical leadership and training to library staff. Supported applications include both open-source and commercial systems, such as the Iowa Digital Library (Islandora) and ArchivesSpace for library finding aids. Reporting to the Administrative Lead, the successful candidate will work collaboratively within the LIT unit to support public discovery and access initiatives, ensuring that library services are accessible, efficient, and aligned with the university’s strategic goals. The role requires effective communication skills to interact with diverse stakeholders, including librarians, students, faculty, and researchers, and a proactive approach to supporting the library’s mission within a major research university environment.


Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of 2 years experience developing application solutions
  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages such as PHP, Python, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, Ruby on Rails, etc.
  • Experience working with relational databases including Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL
  • Knowledge of web publishing technologies such as Apache, IIS, and AWS
  • Demonstrated ability to support a welcoming and respectful environment in professional, academic, or community settings
  • Strong communication skills to engage with users from diverse technological backgrounds

Responsibilities


  • Implement, develop, and support backend technologies including database management and server configurations
  • Recommend, implement, and maintain Content Management Systems (CMS) such as WordPress, Drupal, Omeka, and LibApps
  • Install, configure, and support vended and open-source library web applications
  • Create functional and technical specifications for local application development, involving input from library staff and stakeholders
  • Modify, write, and document program code to support library applications and workflows
  • Recommend tools, languages, technologies, and standards to optimize development processes
  • Build and automate development environment setups and deployment workflows
  • Provide backup system administration support and monitor system health
  • Offer second-tier technical support to library technical services and public services staff
  • Provide third-tier support to library users, including students, faculty, and researchers
