About SIPS: The CALS School of Integrative of Plant Science (SIPS) encompasses five fields: Horticulture, Plant Biology, Plant Breeding & Genetics, Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology, and Soil and Crop Sciences. Combined there are 100+ faculty, ~200 undergraduate majors, 200+ graduate students in six fields, and 600+ other employees located in Ithaca, Geneva, and other satellite locations across New York State. The School offers the multidisciplinary undergraduate major in the Plant Sciences and is also home to the Agricultural Sciences major. School faculty also contribute to the Biology, Global Development, and Viticulture & Enology majors.
Program Statement/Description: Cornell’s Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) group focuses on developing methods to understand and enhance the sustainability of plant production in indoor growing environments to support commercial production for local food systems. A position is available within the Cornell CEA group to advance efforts of the Greenhouse Lighting and Systems Engineering (GLASE) Consortium. Established in 2017, GLASE is a unique association of scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs from academia, industry and government representing multidisciplinary expertise on efficient greenhouse operation and the related industry supply chain. The Consortium is focused on energy-efficient greenhouse lighting, lighting-control technology and greenhouse system integration market opportunities as well as addressing the associated barriers to commercialization of all facets of the rapidly expanding greenhouse environmental control systems industry. The project’s overarching objectives are to transform lighting and systems management in the greenhouse industry by optimizing energy efficiency, crop yield and crop quality by performing research and demonstrations of improved lighting and control prototypes, products and integrated systems. Further, the Consortium seeks to become financially self-sustaining by bringing together academia and marketplace knowledge and experience sufficient to secure continued funding from government and industry focused on continuous improvement energy-efficient technologies and best operating practices in the greenhouse industry.
Position Summary:
In this full-time position, the candidate will provide support to the GLASE consortium and sponsored research projects such as the NYS Greenhouse Database and Benchmark tool and FoodMap NY. In coordination with the GLASE Executive Director and the GLASE PIs at Cornell University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the successful candidate will serve as the day-to-day operations coordinator between all project participants. The candidate will have the opportunity to interact with state and national industry stakeholders, for-profit executives, regulatory agencies, and commercial CEA growers.
The overall activities and responsibilities include:
Strategic engagement with industry stakeholders to recruit new industry members and project participants; build strategic connections with industry stakeholders and identify potential project collaboration opportunities; grow and expand on-going projects in the CEA industry; coordinate conference calls, progress reports, project review meetings; prepare meeting agendas, meeting minutes, meeting results, and planning documents; prepare and apply industry surveys for project evaluation; coordinate strategic marketing activities to promote industry awareness and support the consortium growth; coordinate outreach and educational programs to inform and educate the CEA industry and facilitate CEA specific technology/knowledge transfer; maintain both projects’ websites; develop periodic newsletters; coordinate webinar and technical bulletin series; coordinate the development, design, and distribution of industry impact reports; coordinate the development and execution of industry short courses. The candidate should be capable of working remotely and independently.
