The Role: Director of Software Development

Location: Colorado, New York, or US time zone remote

The S&P Global Marketplace is the singular catalogue to discover and explore the datasets and solutions from across all S&P Global divisions, along with curated third-party data that’s been linked to our core data offerings. The platform serves both our clients and internal users as they look to find the right data for their needs. Marketplace helps us present ourselves as ‘one S&P Global’ to the external market and continues to support our commercial organizations in driving data sales via our integrated delivery ecosystem.

After discovering the correct data for their needs through Marketplace, clients often require the ability to test and trial data in an efficient manner. The S&P Global Marketplace Workbench, launched in 2021, serves this need. Workbench is a web-based notebook environment that allows users to test and experiment with datasets from S&P Global and curated third-party providers in a secure environment without a time consuming, technical set up, utilizing the language of their choice (Python, R, Scala, SQL). Workbench provides starter and analytical notebooks for each dataset so clients can start their evaluation and analysis immediately.

Responsibilities

As the director of software engineering for Marketplace and Workbench we expect you to:

• Translate strategy into action via OKRs and departmental strategy.
• Operate through the development of systems.
• Acts as an escalation point and ensures quality of current value creation.
• Operate autonomously without the need for guidance or direction.
• Have significant personal credibility.
• Be a go-to person for your area of specialism.
• Demonstrate impact outside of their own unit/area/geography.
• Lead others and show them how to operate through the systems they create.
• Take an entity-wide perspective to all their work and connect current operational activity to the wider vision.
• To be able to articulate market trends.
• Use data to inform appropriate decision-making, while considering risk factors.
• Explore multiple possibilities and uses analysis to inform action.

Qualifications

• B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Computer Science (or a related field) or equivalent work experience.
• 10 years of experience working with data-at-scale in a production environment.
• At least 3 years of leading a team, preferably in a multi-national environment.
• Experience building customer-centric products.
• Experience in UI development and UX design.
• Experience designing and implementing data warehouses.
• Experience designing and implementing large-scale, distributed systems in the cloud.
• Solid understanding of core algorithms and data structures, including the ability to select (and apply) the optimal ones to computationally expensive operations over data-at-scale.
• Strong understanding of relational databases and proficiency with SQL.
• Deep knowledge of Java.
• Deep knowledge of at least one scripting language (e.g., Python, Ruby, JavaScript).

Nice-to-Haves

• Knowledge of financial markets and affinity with numbers.
• Experience with Databricks.
• Experience with AWS.
• Working knowledge of probability & statistics.
• Contributions to open-source software.

Compensation/Benefits Information (US Applicants Only)

S&P Global states that the anticipated base salary range for this position is $125,900 - $250,300. Base salary ranges may vary by geographic location.

In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible for an annual incentive bonus/a sales commission plan.
