Job Description:

350 Wisconsin and 350 Wisconsin Action are seeking to hire a dedicated Deputy Director to join our team. For more senior candidates who have more organization-wide management experience, we are open to a role growing into a co-executive director position. This position is appropriate for someone who is interested in supporting an energetic, upbeat, and growing nonprofit organization and grassroots activist community focused on climate change and justice. 350 Wisconsin is committed to supporting employee growth and development and fosters an inclusive and welcoming work environment. The Deputy Director role is a permanent position and will work directly with our Executive Director/Development Director along with other fundraising, communications, and administrative staff to support 350 Wisconsin and 350 Wisconsin Action’s mission and vision.

Position Overview

The following is not an exhaustive list of responsibilities, but is representative of the types of work performed and managed by the Deputy Director. This position would primarily focus on nonprofit leadership, communication, community organizing, and staff and volunteer management. We are seeking applicants who possess a meaningful degree of skills and experience in the majority of these areas. We are also open to crafting a position with more focus on the areas that a promising candidate possesses, so if you have more experience in a certain area, please let us know.

  1. Nonprofit administration and leadership
  2. Support execution of strategic plan with staff and volunteer action teams.
  3. Carry out, supervise, and delegate business operations as assigned.
  4. Support financial oversight.
  5. Work with the board and attend board and committee meetings as appropriate.
  6. Support the Director of Operations in oversight and monitoring of digital security.
  7. Communications
  8. Write news stories, press releases, and other content as needed.
  9. Evolve and implement the communications plan to support the mission in coordination with the Executive Director and key staff.
  10. Coordinate and support digital communication.
  11. Maintain current media list within our organizational database.
  12. Communicate with donors and funders as directed.
  13. Represent 350 Wisconsin to the media.
  14. Community organizing
  15. Represent 350 Wisconsin in key coalition and community spaces.
  16. Establish and maintain relationships and collaboration with key stakeholders, partners, and communities.
  17. Develop and deepen community relationships that help achieve 350 Wisconsin’s climate and racial justice goals.
  18. Lead and support 350 Wisconsin campaign teams as needed.
  19. Staff and volunteer coordination
  20. The Deputy Director works with the Executive Director and staff to help plan and prioritize work assignments, providing both formal and informal feedback to staff. They help motivate staff and encourage a positive, collaborative staff culture.
  21. The Deputy Director regularly engages with key volunteers with respect to their team assignments and priorities, making sure that teams are aligned with the organization’s strategic priorities and assigning staff support where needed.
  22. Fundraising and development: Support the Executive Director in grant development, funder pitches, and donor connection as needed.

350 Wisconsin also works closely with our sister organization, 350 Wisconsin Action. 350 Wisconsin Action is a C4 organization that shares much of its staff and works toward keeping the climate crisis at the center of the political conversation and pushing for progressive policies that address the climate crisis in ways that center racial, social, and economic justice. This position would also oversee 350 Wisconsin Action and its activities in conjunction with the Executive Director.

Preferred Experience (in a paid, educational or volunteer role)

  1. 3–8+ years of management experience, preferably with a nonprofit organization
  2. Experience or understanding of working remotely (hybrid or fully remote)
  3. Proficient in Google Suites or similar shared digital work spaces
  4. Previous experience with a CRM database or the demonstrated ability to learn new technologies (experience with EveryAction is a plus)
  5. Previous knowledge of the state of the climate movement preferred but not required
  6. Sensitivity to and valuation of environmental justice considerations
  7. Demonstrated writing and communication ability
  8. Proficiency with social media and other digital organizing tools

Employment Details

  1. This is a 100% time salaried position, working the equivalent of 40 hours per week. Occasional weekend and evening work is required. (We are also open to 80% time if desired by the right candidate.)
  2. Work schedule has flexibility, and we will work with you to balance the needs of the individual and the organization.
  3. Pay: $52,361.92 (equal to $25.17 per hour)
  4. Health care stipend provided to eligible employees
  5. Reports to co-Executive Director
  6. Must be based in Wisconsin, Madison or Milwaukee preferred but not required. Occasional travel may be required.
  7. While being in Wisconsin is a requirement, the work day to day is remote.
  8. Must have access to the internet and a computer.
  9. Must have access to occasional transportation.
  10. Paid Time Off includes 4 weeks/year, plus holidays, and a winter holiday “shutdown week.”

Physical Demands

Occasional physical demands include attending events and connecting directly with community members. This could include lifting tabling materials and using hands to work with paper. The physical demands may also include driving.
