JOB TITLE: Curriculum Writer

LOCATION: Remote

COMPENSATION: $40/hr

From English learners, multilingual students, bilingual students and dual language learners who are struggling to read or write, Summit K12’s online, standards-based supplemental curriculum will close gaps and ensure growth for all students.

1. Role Overview

The Curriculum Writer, a contract role, is responsible for the design, development, and pedagogical alignment of educational content within the SummitK12 Learning Management System (LMS). A core focus of this position is creating curriculum and standards-aligned materials specifically for Emergent Bilingual students.

Key requirements for the role include a deep expertise in English Language Development (ELD) across all four domains: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. The successful candidate must demonstrate exceptional attention to instructional detail and technical accuracy, along with the ability to manage assignments efficiently using Monday Boards.

2. Scope of Work

The scope of the work includes, but is not limited to:

Curriculum Development & Writing (80%)

  1. Content Creation: Write high-quality, clear, engaging, and rigorously age-appropriate K–12 instructional materials. A critical focus is placed on instructional design principles, ensuring all materials are scaffolded and tailored to meet the diverse needs of students. The writer must ensure that the language complexity, cognitive demand, and skills assessed align precisely with the targeted proficiency level.
  2. Integrating Media and Technology: Crafting scripts for instructional videos, storyboards for interactive simulations, and content for the SummitK12 digital learning platform.
  3. Maintaining Consistency and Fidelity: Adhering strictly to established style guides, accessibility standards, curriculum scope and sequence, and internal best practices to ensure a seamless student and teacher experience across all grade levels (K–12).
  4. ELPS Alignment: Develop materials specifically designed in alignment with English Language Proficiency Standards across the nation.
  5. Content Input: Utilize a Curriculum Upload Tool to accurately input, format, and upload developed content into the SummitK12 LMS, ensuring it meets provided pedagogical specifications.
  6. Task Management: Complete curriculum writing and assessment tasks assigned via Monday Boards or from the Principal Curriculum Lead within specified timelines.
  7. Quality Control: Ensure all materials are unique. When required, follow AI Policy and only use the appropriate technologies.
  8. Communication: Maintain proactive updates regarding drafting progress and instructional blockers.
  9. Collaboration: Apply feedback from subject matter experts and editors to revise current work and improve future content.

Standards Alignment & Mapping (10%)

  1. Standards Alignment: Align all content with required state or national standards, producing necessary mapping documents under the guidance of the Principal Curriculum Lead or Senior Curriculum Writer to demonstrate this compliance.
  2. Triage: Resolve content alignment issues to meet specific state or national standards in a timely manner.

Documentation & Best Practices (10%)

  1. LMS Templates: Maintain documentation for curriculum templates used within the LMS.
  2. Scalability: Document naming conventions and instructional best practices to ensure repeatability across units.

3. Required Skills & Qualifications

To execute the scope of work effectively, the contractor must possess:

  1. Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, or a related field.
  2. Experience: Prior experience in curriculum writing, teaching, or educational content development. Experience teaching multilingual learners or developing content for multilingual learners is preferred.
  3. Technical Proficiency: Expert use of Google Workspace, LMS platforms, and digital content creation tools (slides, videos, etc.).
  4. Collaboration: Ability to apply feedback from subject matter experts and editors to future content.
