Job Description:

This is an exciting opportunity for a financial leader to join the Port Washington Yacht Club (PWYC), a well established and respected private club in Port Washington, New York. As the Controller, you will serve as liaison to the Treasurer and will work with the Club’s external auditors as required. The Controller reports to the General Manager and works as an integral member of the management team, supporting the Club and department managers by providing accurate and current financial data to facilitate informed decisions. The Controller is a hands-on manager of all the accounting areas and directly assists the General Manager on all strategic matters relating to budgets, accounts receivable, financial systems and internal controls. He/she develops and monitors accounting policies and procedures, auditing, budgets and taxes. The Controller also prepares financial statements, forecasts, and analyses for all administrative and managerial functions. In addition, you will have responsibility for the HR and IT functions. The accounting system in use is JONAS.

 

The ideal candidate will have experience working in finance or as a controller in clubs and/or in hospitality. You will be replacing a Controller who is retiring and has been with the organization for over 25 years and who will assist in your onboarding and transition.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Maximizes return on financial assets by establishing financial policies, procedures, controls, and reporting systems.
  • Guides financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Protects assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls.
  • Monitors and confirms financial condition by conducting audits and providing information to external auditors.
  • Maximizes return and limits risk on cash by minimizing bank balances and making investments.
  • Prepares budgets by establishing schedules; collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data; recommending plans; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions.
  • Provides status of financial condition by collecting, interpreting, reporting financial data, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation, anticipating future legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements, filing financial reports, and advising management on needed actions.
  • Ensures operation of equipment by establishing preventive maintenance requirements and service contracts, maintaining equipment inventories, and evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Completes operational requirements by scheduling and assigning employees; following up on work results.
  • Maintains financial staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees.
  • Serves as a liaison between the Finance Committee and club Treasurer.
  • Owns responsibility for managing IT and HR functions of the club.

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
  • Minimum 5-10 years’ experience in professional accounting/finance
  • Excel and Word competency
  • Strong understanding of banking processes and financial data analysis
  • Working knowledge of national and local tax regulations and compliance reporting
  • Experience in managing payroll, with focus on streamlining accounting processes
  • Exemplary history of financial project management
  • Performance management leading, recruiting and developing staff
  • Experience working on a membership-based nonprofit club highly desirable
  • JONAS experience is a plus

 

Schedule: Monday to Friday

 

Salary: $100,000 - $122,000 per year plus yearly-bonus eligible
