Responsibilities:

The Physics Content Editor will work under the supervision of the current Senior Physics Content Editor to develop college-level test materials and to provide content expertise to support the Physics portion of the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). This position will work with external consultants to develop passages and items from authoring to operational usage, being responsible for ensuring the items are technically accurate, stylistically appropriate, and aligned to test specifications. The Content Editor will also be responsible for responding to challenges to test content by examinees.


Responsibilities will include:

  • Write passage-based and discrete items that address exam specifications
  • Review items submitted by contract external consultants and make changes to improve conent, coding (Metadata), clarity, grammar, cross compatability, and test performance
  • Coordinate with graphics design and publishing to ensure style, format, and graphics are appropriate
  • Collaborate with other editors on passage sets, including those that cover multiple disciplines
  • Perform internal/external reviews of items:
  • Facilitate cross-discipline internal review to solicit feedback and improve items
  • Reconcile peer comments and make changes
  • Provide items for external review among content experts and bias/sensitivity reviewers
  • Reconcile comments and make changes
  • Circle back with internal editors to ensure agreement on changes to items and with external technical reviewers to ensure that content accuracy is maintained during the editing process
  • Source contractors with appropriate subject-matter and item-writing expertise, and/or technical reviewer skills
  • Provide context and instructions for their assignments
  • Provide feedback and coaching on their passages and item sets
  • Help writers and reviewers understand the strategy and best practices associated with multiple-choice items, including but not limited to:
    • Application focus
    • Problem solving nature
    • Conciseness
    • Effective use of distractors
  • Nurture a core group of writers and reviewers who can perform effectively over time, take direction well, and appreciate the need for collaboration, a test/item focus, timeliness, and accuracy

Qualifications:

Education, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • PhD in Physics
  • At least one-year Physics teaching experience at the introductory level (AP Physics or with undergraduate populations)
  • Test development experience is preferred but not required

Skills:

  • Excellent writing skills
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment
