The content developer will work with the digital manager and editorial department on both short and long term projects that drive customer retention through reader engagement tools, such as newsletters and social media channels, and audience acquisition through new online content.

The primary focus will be creating compelling editorial newsletters for the Down East brand. The content developer will also write SEO-friendly articles for downeast.com. This will involve collaboration with the digital, editorial, and creative departments to develop content designed for the Down East audience that drives traffic and engagement. The content developer will ensure workflows for projects run smoothly and on time.

This role requires a mix of creative, technical, and editorial skills to produce high-quality, engaging digital media that aligns with the brand’s voice and strategy, and it requires staying up to date on SEO best practices and necessary programs (Hubspot, Wordpress, GA4), analyzing digital trends, and monitoring Maine news.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Responsible for curating, designing, and writing for all reader-facing editorial newsletters that engage and inspire.
2. Responsible for writing SEO-friendly, digital-only articles for downeast.com.
3. Project manage, prioritize, and actively track all digital design deliverables with on-time delivery.
4. Review web traffic and analyze data for online-only content strategy and improve audience reach of digital articles written for downeast.com.
5. Assist the digital manager with special projects as needed (e.g. contests, workflow/website/project audits).
6. Responsible for maintaining a clean and smooth-running Hubspot audience database, with a comprehensive understanding of all audience-facing media at any given time.
7. Regularly conduct audits of our current email strategy and identify areas for improvement.
8. Post to, monitor, and manage the brand’s social media channels, and work with the digital manager to refine social media strategy.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Manage tasks in Basecamp (project management software).
2. Answer inquiries from the public about Maine and Down East.
3. Occasionally represent Down East in public forums.
4. Perform other related duties as required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:

1. Proficiency in Hubspot or another newsletter CRM system for email marketing, workflows, and performance tracking.
2. Prior writing experience at another publication or online brand.
3. Familiarity with Wordpress.
4. Proven ability to post to and manage social media (Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky, Pinterest).

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING REQUIRED:

1. Bachelor’s degree.
2. Proven ability in project management, writing, and editing.
3. Superb organizational and communication skills.
4. Proficiency in managing time and tasks and collaborating in a remote-work environment.
5. A passion for Maine’s people, places, culture, and social and natural history.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

1. This is an in-office/remote hybrid position.
2. Normal office environment, not subject to extremes in temperature, noise, odors, etc.
3. Regular use of computer keyboard, requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity.
