Montgomery College, Rockville, has an immediate need for a full-time Construction Trades Worker in the Alteration Renovation Addition Facilities Department. The work schedule is Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. (40 hours). This is a bargaining, non-exempt, grade 25 position. For non-exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. Job Description
Duties include but are not limited to:
Performs the work of journey-level carpenters, masons, painters, concrete finisher to build, install, and finish work related to constructing and renovating of structures. Performs demolition work; erects studs, installs drywall, prepares walls for paint and/or wallpaper, paints and wallpapers, installs tile, lays flooring, installs railing, performs rough carpentry, installs counters and furniture. Fabricate and install counters and casework to support construction and renovation projects
- Demo walls and structures.
- Erect metal framing members.
- Hang and finish drywall.
- Install jamb, doors and door hardware.
- Lay brick and block.
- Form, place and finish concrete.
- Paint and apply finishes to wall, trim and door surfaces.
- Install suspended ceiling systems and ceiling tile.
- Install and repair flooring material (VCT tile, carpet, ceramic wall and floor tile).
- Fabricate laminate and natural case works from both plans and scratch.
- Install case work.
- Fabricate and install solid surface and laminate counters.
- Install sinks and faucets in counters prior to installation.
Operate a backhoe, skid steer and dump truck when required for new construction sites; performs routine maintenance on construction vehicles; maintains operating and maintenance logs for construction vehicles. Operate other equipment to support construction projects.
- Operate backhoe to support construction projects and O&M staff in emergency situations (snow or other task).
- Operate skid steer and number of different attachments.
- Operate numerous types of powered lift from 20'-60'.
- Operate tractors and other construction related equipment as needed.
- Operate College dump trucks to remove trash from construction projects.
Assist electrician on duties pertaining to a project/job.
- Under the supervision of the Electrician, assisting on project/jobs- cutting outlets, pulling wire, labeling panels and circuits, fishing down lines, running conduit, and trim out.
Repairs worn or broken products or fabricates items to complete construction projects.
- Repair or fabricate railing and handrail using different types of welding material and process.
- Repair or fabricates draws, doors or shelf to support projects.
Physical Requirements
- Must have physical capability to effectively communicate and interact with employees and the public, to effectively use and operate various items of office-related equipment such as (but not limited to) a desktop computer, telephone, calculator, copier and fax machine.
- Must have physical ability to walk, stand and sit as well as perform climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping and repetitive motions.
- Physical ability to handle and lift a variety of medium to heavy construction materials (over 100 lbs.).
- Physical ability to use or operate a wide variety of construction tools and equipment.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Completion of a vocational or apprentice-level training program in carpentry, masonry, plumbing, painting, electrical, or other building trades work; and/or any combination of education, training, and experience providing an understanding of the trade and the ability to perform the duties of the job.
- Five years of experience performing general building maintenance or construction involving carpentry, masonry, plumbing, painting, electrical, or other building trades work at the journey level.
- Valid driver’s license and evidence of a good driving record.
- Ability to lift, carry, push or pull medium to heavy objects weighing up to 50 lbs without assistance and 50 to 100 lbs with assistance.
- Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship
Salary Range: $27.68 to $35.98 (hourly). Initial salary placement is based on candidate experience and internal equity.
