Job Description:

Are you seeking an opportunity to make an impact on one of the most pressing issues facing women today? If so, read on!

Abortion in America, a bold national initiative committed to reclaiming power through the truth of personal stories, is seeking a talented Communications Director to join our outstanding team. This is a rare opportunity to help build something new – from the ground up – at a pivotal moment in our country’s fight for reproductive freedom.

About Abortion in America :

Abortion in America exists to make abortion access a reality for everyone, no matter where they live, by building public understanding and urgency around reproductive freedom in the post-Roe era.

By identifying people harmed by abortion bans, supporting them in taking sustained action, and getting their accounts in front of audiences who are not seeing their stories organically, we translate personal experiences into lasting change.

Our work consists of three interconnected strategies:

  1. Documenting and sharing personal testimonials that show the lived reality of abortion bans.
  2. Supporting storytellers for sustained action.
  3. Leveraging the power of personal stories to drive change through state organizing, strategic partnerships, and the work of our litigation arm, Amplify Legal

About the Role:

The Abortion in America Communications Director will be responsible for building a public-facing narrative that advances our core strategies, help our organization reach priority audiences, and position storytellers from our community as powerful messengers on the issue of reproductive health. While we know these personal testimonials are incredibly impactful for people who are loosely supportive of abortion rights but not taking action on the issue, many of the audiences who most need to hear them simply do not encounter them. It is the job of the Communications Director to think creatively about how to change that.

The Communications Director will need a passion for storytelling, deep knowledge of traditional and emerging media outlets, and an understanding of the issue of abortion and the nuances of the movement for reproductive freedom. The right candidate for this role is scrappy, creative, communicative, and bold. They will be able to rise to the occasion in moments of rapid response without getting bogged down in Beltway back-and-forth, while keeping their focus on shaping an overarching narrative around the relevance of abortion and abortion storytellers in post-Roe America.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Shape and execute a strategic communications plan for the organization that encompasses national press as well as coverage in our priority states (Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Texas)
  2. Work with the CEO and senior leadership team to develop a message and narrative for Abortion in America and our litigation arm, Amplify Legal
  3. Pitch stories and build relationships with a range of reporters and outlets covering everything from women’s health and lifestyle to legal issues and beyond
  4. Prepare staff and other key spokespeople for press interviews and other speaking or broadcast opportunities
  5. Support Amplify Legal in communications efforts around legal filings and case developments
  6. Lead on rapid response strategy as needed
  7. Help sift through legal filings and polling research for compelling anecdotes and data points that will resonate with journalists and their audiences
  8. Work closely with the Creative Director to support distribution of Abortion in America content and storytelling, including through relationships with media outlets and journalists
  9. Works closely with the Development Director to create campaigns and communications that foster donor engagement and stewardship.
  10. Establish a cadence of reporter briefings to help build competency in interviewing storytellers and share relevant news and information coming out of Abortion in America
  11. Set a process for disseminating relevant news items to the team, including establishing clips
  12. Work with the Director of Partnerships and Program Operations to develop relationships with partner organizations, and be aware of the messaging of other key organizations and people
  13. Draft press releases, statements, and toolkits as needed
  14. Identify and manage external vendors as needed to assist with communications and media
  15. Share metrics and learnings after key press moments
  16. Lead workshops and trainings at public events, including Abortion in America’s annual storyteller convening

Who You Are and What You Bring:

  1. 3-5 years experience overseeing and executing communications and/or media strategy for a national organization or public figure
  2. Strong written and verbal communication skills
  3. Robust knowledge of media landscape, including state media outlets
  4. Experience and enthusiasm for working with diverse media outlets and communities
  5. A strong commitment to reproductive justice and abortion access
  6. Excellent interpersonal skills, sensitivity, and discretion
  7. Proficiency in Google Suites, MS Office, Slack, and other platforms
  8. Ability to work independently and manage own workload
  9. Ability to travel occasionally as needed

Compensation and Benefits:

This is a full time (40 hours) exempt position with a salary of $120,000 - $135,000 reporting to the Chief of Staff.

Comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (and their families). Employees are able to enroll in 401k retirement plan and are eligible for a 3% automatic contribution and up to a 3% employer match on 401k contributions. Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits. Employees will receive 120 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 20 hours of volunteer leave annually. Employees will also receive 13 paid holidays throughout the calendar year. Employees are eligible for 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave after 90 days of employment.
