The Manager Civil Engineering participates in a team environment consisting of engineers and designers to produce construction documents for site development of advanced technology facilities and building systems.  This person will lead the development of the Civil Engineering department within our Civil, Structural, Architecture discipline and initially be responsible for liaison and management of project-specific civil engineering consultants in various states.  

Explore your tasks and responsibilities

  • Define and develop the Civil Engineering department 
  • Manage civil engineering consultants – to include Civil Engineering, Geotechnical surveys and other soils and underground utility assessment. Project support tasks include review of scopes of work, proposals, change orders, construction documents, and field observations as contracted to the consultants.
  • Coordinate with Exyte Procurement on consultant scopes and contracts and pre-qualification of prospective consultants in various jurisdictions of new projects
  • Coordinate and communicate with consultant documents and schedule changes and be ready to step in and help in the resolution of performance issues 
  • Ensure that consultant construction phase activities are on track and that project closeout documentation including record drawings are delivered.
  • Liaise with construction site local authorities, subcontractors, utilities, vendors, and other stakeholders
  • Attracts, retains, and develops premier talent through recruiting, mentoring, training and other employee development activities
  • Frequently participates in project meetings, including report-out on project progress, performance risks, budget status, coordination issues, and staffing requirements
  • Reports out during recurring Manager meetings, the status of all projects and proposals supported by their team to identify technical challenges, and problems or risks. Holds weekly project discipline leads meetings.
  • Lead the development of Plans, Specifications, and Estimates packages (PSE) for site/civil work including grading, drainage and earthwork, storm drain systems, sanitary sewer systems, water systems, utility coordination, access/private roads, site permitting and other site related tasks
  • Maintains primary accountability for all civil deliverables produced by their team
  • Mentors Interns and junior members of project teams
  • Ensures staff forecasting is current on a weekly basis for the discipline, as entered in the Manpower Management System (MMS). Supports adjustment of resource additions / reductions within the discipline
  • Be familiar with all local discipline projects in sufficient detail to know schedule, resource requirements, deliverable dates, etc. so staff can be allocated as needed to accomplish a smooth product flow
  • Liaise with clients and agencies, subcontractors, and design teams on projects
  • When necessary, employ the use of personal civil engineering capabilities related to programming, planning, design, and project management on specific project assignments
  • Plans and directs the coordinated activities of a design department. Coordinates with Project Leadership staff to plan and schedule discipline deliverables and activities including man-hour estimation, assigning personnel, and supervision of discipline personnel on the Projects
  • Supports project on-site execution and make decisions to support projects and act as technical consultant
  • Develops manpower and labor cost requirements for projects and monitors them to aid management of project schedule and budget
  • Provides specialized technical input to studies and design for staff’s specific area of expertise
  • Develops study and design procedures to facilitate high-quality, cost-effective work by discipline team
  • Works closely with the project team and other disciplines as well as other design offices
  • Coordinates with disciplines in the preparation and development of the deliverables and ensuring those other disciplines’ inputs are incorporated
  • Provide technical assistance in the resolution of design problems including field investigations, detailed design work, detailed review of calculations done by others and general coordination of design aspects
  • Other duties as assigned

Show your expertise

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering required
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License required
  • Nation Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Record preferred
  • OSHA-10 certification required soon after hire for construction site access
  • 10+ years’ experience engineering or related land development 
  • 5+ years’ experience managing multiple complex large scale land development projects
  • Consulting engineering experience
  • Experience working within a team environment
  • Experience in the quality control review process
  • Experience contributing to continuous improvement processes
  • Experience leading a team
  • Advanced Technology Facilities (ATF) experience preferred
  • Experience with earthwork, site, geotechnical, waste management and stormwater aspects of large commercial and heavy industrial projects is expected.

  • Ability to manage 5+ staff
  • AutoCad applications proficiency required. Civil 3D proficiency a plus
  • Proficient technical computer skills in MS Office products including conducting virtual meetings with staff and client teams
