A legacy Chicago-area local news organization with more than 100 years of community publishing history is building a new model for local journalism — one that uses smart technology, editorial judgment and human oversight to strengthen civic awareness in local communities.

We are looking for curious, detail-oriented people who care about local government, schools, neighborhoods and community life — and who are interested in how new tools can help local newsrooms work faster, smarter and more effectively.

As an AI-Assisted Local News Producer, you will use our editorial workflow and technology tools to help produce short, accurate and readable local news articles, community digests and public-information updates for Chicago neigborhoods and local cities and villages.

This is not a traditional field-reporting job. It is production-focused, remote freelance work supporting a network of local news publications. The right candidate will know that technology can help speed up the work — but that judgment, accuracy, context and clarity still matter most.

What You’ll Do

Use our editorial tools and workflow to help draft, revise and prepare local news articles and community digests.

Review public records, press releases, meeting materials and local announcements for story opportunities.

Apply sound editorial judgment to check facts, clarify language, improve structure and ensure readability.

Help turn routine local information into useful, accurate stories for community readers.

Communicate clearly with editors and teammates to meet daily and weekly production goals.

Follow established editorial standards, including accuracy, fairness, attribution and plain-language writing.

What We’re Looking For

Some experience in journalism, communications, publishing, public information or related work. Internships count.

Strong attention to accuracy, names, dates, titles, places and context.

Interest in local government, schools, public safety, business, events and neighborhood news.

Comfort using technology, including AI-assisted tools, while keeping human judgment at the center of the work.

Good organization, time management and follow-through.

A self-starter who is curious, dependable, coachable and open to feedback.

Chicago-area knowledge is preferred but not required.
