Charlie Norwood VA System is looking for candidate who is an enthusiastic leader to Chief a robust Research program. The Associate Chief of Staff for Research (ACOS-R), along with the research service team will formulate goals and objectives of the research program, as well as planning, developing, and directing the complex scientific and administrative activities necessary to advance the program.  The ACOS-R has leadership responsibility for all administrative and budgetary operations of the Research Service and ensures that programs meet all regulatory compliance requirements.

CHARLIE NORWOOD VA MEDICAL CENTER

The Augusta Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center (CNVAMC) is a level 1a, medical school affiliated, two-division Medical Center that provides tertiary care in Medicine, Surgery, Specialty Care, Neurology, Psychiatry, Physical Medicine and Rehab, Primary Care, Geriatrics, and a dedicated Spinal Cord Institute serving a multi-state catchment area. The Medical Center is affiliated with the Augusta University [AU], in Augusta, GA and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical center, integrating clinical care, teaching, and research, making it an attractive academic and research Medical Center.

Responsibilities:

  • Participates in planning, organizing, coordinating, and controlling complex clinical Research program. Participates in long-range program planning and model development for effective research.
  • Monitors and analyzes new legislation, regulations, policies, program initiatives, and requirements.
  • Supports effective labor/management relations in compliance with OPM, VHA, and Medical Center regulations. Works to ensure that the intent of labor/management partnerships and affirmative action goals are adhered to and met.
  • Supervises all Research Service staff, either directly or through subordinate supervisors, and assures all Human Resources regulations are followed.
  • Develops and/or reviews and approves policies and procedures for administering the organization's research program.
  • Advises on all matters related to developing, issuing, and implementing local policies for the research program.
  • Establishes program emphasis and operating guidelines; setting priorities, determining resources needs, allocating resources, and accounting for their effective use; identifying and obtaining funding from a variety of sources; dealing with a broad spectrum of factors that impact the program such as public relations, other federal agencies, and the affiliated medical school(s) and hospital(s).
  • Reviews and approves the development of policies to protect human subjects, the care and use of animal subjects, and research safety.
  • Participates in planning, organizing, coordinating, and controlling complex clinical Research programs. Participates in long-range program planning and model development for effective research.
  • Promotes and participates in presenting research findings at local, state, national, or professional meetings.
  • Publications in refereed scientific journals widely read within the incumbent's field, particularly as first or senior author.
  • Membership on national scientific advisory or grant review committees and/or editorial boards of scientific journals.
  • Reviews and approves reports required by oversight agencies of incidents (adverse events, unanticipated problems), complaints, or other requested information.
  • Consult with principal investigators and serve as a resource for scientific and technical issues.
  • Provides and/or reviews and approves written and oral guidance to members of the public, including complainants and the regulated community, regarding issues about the protection of human subjects.
  • Maintains effective interdepartmental relationships demonstrating active problem resolution skills and close cooperation with other programs and services in accomplishing the medical facility mission and goals.
  • Oversees the resolution to any problems that may arise within the Research Service.
  • Conducts program assessments and apprise the R&D Committee of current status.
  • An active role in the training of young scientists and formal academic teaching.
  • Evaluates and provides expert advice and consultation to researchers and clinicians involved in research.

Preferred Experience:

  • Current research experience in healthcare system. 
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership role in a research institution or program.
  • Eligible for associate professor or full professor level academic appointment at university affiliate.
  • Record of distinguished accomplishments and proficiency in peer reviewed research and administration to include research publications and funding, VA Merit Award submissions and/or Non-VA grant submissions, mentoring experience, and promoting a progressive and dynamic work environment in a complex academic environment.
  • Experience in working in health care systems and VA research enterprises with an academic affiliation.

AUGUSTA, GEORGIA

Located near the South Carolina border, Augusta, Georgia, is the state's second largest metropolitan area.  A very low cost of living, stable real estate market and excellent schools and neighborhoods makes Augusta an ideal place to call home.  Augusta is probably best known for its golf courses. The scenic Augusta National Golf Club hosts the Masters Tournament every year.    In the downtown area, the Augusta Riverwalk and Amphitheatre, located along the Savannah River, features Saturday farmers markets and Sunday jazz concerts that take place along the river. Sports fans can cheer on the Augusta Green Jackets baseball team.
